Sad but inevitable…

It's a sad but inevitable truth that time stands still for no man, or website. This applies to me and this website which will be shutting down pretty much immediately. However, fear not because I have bought a new domain name in the same vein, and most if not all of the content from here will find its way to:

britishtvcomedy.com

To be brutal, the name "Comedy DVDs For Sale" is more than a little bit naff methinks. For a kick off, like any other physical software media I reckon DVDs will be obsolete before too long and I don't want the same to happen to my lovely website. So from now on it's britishtvcomedy.com. Please come and see me over there...

Arthur redux

Oh so true, so very very true. Two countries united by a common tongue, well yes, but that's about as far as it goes. The people who left Blighty in 1620 probably did have a sense of humour, it's just the irony bit that was missing from their collective psyche. Or is the irony in comparing Russell Brand with Dudley Moore... what next, Jonathan Ross as Peter Cook?

Just another short rant about why there is no need to create American versions of British comedies that were close to perfection the first time around. This holds true virtually 100% of the time, whether it be for the big or small screen. All I need to do is utter the words of Death at a Funeral, Fawlty Towers, Red Dwarf, Spaced, Coupling, etc. Ok, The Office worked, but the list of those series that have successfully made the leap across the pond is very, very short. I know you need to give producers the benefit of the doubt, but I see no need for anyone to follow through on the rumor from several years back about an American version of The Vicar of Dibley.

Dudley Moore as the loveable drunk, ArthurWell, this just in from Hollywood. I know I need to withhold judgment but, somehow, I just find it difficult to embrace the news of a re-make of the 1981 classic film, Arthur, that starred Dudley Moore and Liza Minnelli. It is a star-studded cast, with Russell Brand in the lead role of the rich, happy drunk who must marry the wealthy girl or lose his inheritance, Dame Helen Mirren in the John Gielgud role and, now, Jennifer Garner as the heiress and Nick Nolte as her father. All great talents with Dame Helen Mirren leading the way, but I just don’t see the reasoning behind or the need create this new version.

Ok, I’m done now. Am I missing something here?

John Cleese rants on the state of television

It's not clear in this article whether Cleese is ranting about comedy in particular or TV in general. What is clear however, is that he is browned off by the ratings chasers who are in charge of both BBC and ITV. On the one hand, ITV you can almost excuse - they get their money from advertising, for which they can charge more for shows with bigger audiences. The BBC is a slightly different case as theirs comes from the licence fee. It seems that the Beeb has been sucked into a ratings war, instead of setting the quality standard and seeing if ITV can follow. For all the hot air of Sky, I believe that their product is vastly inferior, even to ITV's output, so I'm not considering them. Much of the other material available on the myriad satellite channels in the UK is made up of imports and stuff from the BBC archives.

The real shame in all of this is the BBC's apparent desire to compete with ITV on ratings.  They have no need. To take comedy as just one example (this is a comedy website after all), there is absolutely no comparison between the two.  Whereas the BBC has delivered to us TW3, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Porridge, Open All Hours, Fawlty Towers, The Young Ones, Blackadder, The Fast Show, The Royle Family, Dinnerladies, Keeping Up Appearances, Gavin And Stacey and countless others, ITV has given us George and Mildred, Mind Your Language and er - not much else.  I loved Girls On Top - well it was written by French and Saunders and of course Men Behaving Badly was originally an ITV series until they got bored with it.

Nowadays, both engage in the big set piece shows - Live From The Apollo or an Audience with... kind of stuff.  All very funny, but also so incredibly formulaic and of course cheap.  Even the panel shows such as QI or Mock The Week are made because they are relatively cheap to make.  New sitcoms take a while to get going, and if you're going to follow Cleese's example with Fawlty Towers and only make 12 episodes, then unless you are John Cleese it's going to become incredibly difficult to have your series made...

Now, more than ever, former Monty Python great, John Cleese, would love to utter the words, “And Now For Something Completely Different” and have it relate to television in the 21st century.

JohnCleese taping Fawlty Towers Revisited for PBSStill recuperating in his Santa Barbara home from recent knee surgery and planning his upcoming Alimony Tour across the UK, John Cleese, has had a lot of time on his hands these days to think about “things”. With respect to the BBC, ITV  and British television, in general, he doesn’t like what he sees. Gone are the “glory days” of television where the word quality was mentioned, and mentioned frequently, during program planning meetings, Cleese says.

The star of Monty Python’s Flying Circus, Fawlty Towers and The Frost Report, amongst others, Cleese obviously misses television output from the fifties through the eighties. As I have said repeatedly, there is quality television there, unfortunately, you just have to search a lot harder for it. From Cleese’s perspective, the good ‘ole days consisted of far less bad television with Britain leading the way. He doesn’t see it getting any better as planners grab for the elusive dollar, laying blame at the feet of “hard-headed businessmen” that now control the likes of ITV and the BBC.

The word quality may not appear in planning meetings anymore, but it still exists and it’s up to viewers to demand it no matter what side of the pond you’re on.
